Talking point #7

 “Anita Hill is a Boy” by Peggy Orenstein

This article talks about...so i couldnt blog yesterday but i went back and looked at the article and it wasnt that bad. it talks about how educators around the country are working to develop a gender-fair curricula, they are offering self defense to young girls, sex ed classes to elementary students and setting up a class about sexual harassment. 

 When boys feel like they're being forced to admire a women they try to pick one that they think behaves sort of like a man. Thats what they can best relate too."

i find this quote very true because if boys tries to admire a girly girly he feels "gay" so by picking a girl that is more rough around the edges and likes the same things as him...it is a lot easier for him to admire that girl.

"If I told them I was interested in women’s history, they’d call me a fag. So I just take it and don’t talk about it." 

Men are embarrassed about showing off women history because they wont feel mascatlent because they dont have the history men up there. plus most men dont know a lot about women history or their rights that they fought for. most men just research and learn about male history. men should study more on women and learn the about equality.

Talking Point #6

"One More River to Cross"- Recognizing the Real Injury in Brown: A Prerequisite to Sharping New Remedies. By: Charles Lawrence

This reading By Lawrence talks about how blacks where separated from whites students and how America has been struggling from equality. There was a very big focus on Brown vs Board of Education and blacks where not able to get the same education as everyone else. This has caused many people of color to not get the education that they should of gotten, so with that they aren't able to proceed into a greater field of education.

"Once blacks are labeled as inferior, they are denied access to equal societal opportunities. The resulting inadequate educational preparation, poverty of cultural backgrounds, and lack of experience constitute real limitations on their ability to contribute to society, and the prophecy of their inferiority is fulfilled."

I found this quote very interesting because it reminds me of Haven because once the black students are labeled no one wants to help them. people seem to stop caring and look the other way. no student should feel inferior or even superior to anyone else. school should be a place where they should feel comfortable and able to learn because if they get taught that they are inferior that will carry on into their life and then their lives might turn out the way they should of.

"The small cadre of lawyers who formulated and implemented the BTCYWIl strategy were well aware that the desegregation of schools would not be a panacea. Their ultimate goal was full political and civil equality for Blacks; they knew that this could not be achieved until the entire system of segregation had been destroyed."

Even though segregation was not really solved during this case, it did mix things up and kind of influenced the world on segregation. in today's world i feel like we should take a chance and stand up for things instead of being afraid that what we are fighting for might be shot down. but if you take a chance, the issue might not fully be solved but something might come out of it.

The American negro is not a dominate minority; therefore he must fight for complete elimination of segregation as his ultimate goal."

Segregation should be fought against, people of color should never feel inferior to anyone. whites shouldn't feel superior to people of color. everyone should be equal and everyone should get the same equality. a colored persons goal should never be to eliminate segregation, segregation should not even exist so should be no goal or it shouldn't be the person of colors goal, it should be the white persons goal because they are the ones that are doing the segregation.

Over all i think that this article was focusing on how people if color have been fighting for segregation for the longest time and they have been hurt during the segregation of schools because they weren't getting the same opportunities as everyone else. this article was a little confusing but over all segregation has caused a lot of problems that need to be fixed.

In The Service Of What? The Politics of Service Learning by Joseph Kahne and Joel Westheimer

 Kahne and Westheimer argue in this article that service learning helps the students that are being taught and also help the people that are working with the students. Not only do they talk about how service learning helps the students and teachers it also helps show the aspects and ideas service learning brings.

"Efforts to integrate service learning activities into the curriculum have great potential and deserve the support they are now receiving. To date. however, little attention has been given to sorting out the goals and motivations that underlie the spectrum of service learning projects emerging in schools throughout the country. Is it beneficial to point out such differences and risk creating some opposition to service learning? We think so. Clarifying different goals provides educators with an opportunity to consider systematically a range of possible priorities (including some they might otherwise not consider) and the relation of these to their practice. "

service learning is something that you cant just walk through and not be interactive with. you need to be active and motivated because you will get a lot more out of the whole experience. You cant just walk through things because then you wont get the important things out of it. when i do my service learning through VIPS i cant just walk through things because that wont help anyone. yeah i might be going through the process but I'm not interacting with the students so they are getting anything out of it. Service learning is a great thing and people need to put more into it because you aren't just helping the children, you are helping yourself too.

"Service learning makes students active participants in service projects that aim to respond to the needs of the community while furthering the academic goals of students."

i think that this quote really explains what the article is talking about. it supports the argument well because it pretty much says that service learning is good and is not bad in any way.

"Educators and legislators alike maintain that service learning can improve the community and invigorate the classroom, providing rich educational experiences for students at all levels of schooling." 

i think this quote is talking about how legislators and educators believe that service learning is a great way to get children to more involved and to help them get a better education. it in riches the educational experience and allows the children to get one on one help. it challenges the students in a great way and makes them learning in a better community. 

over all it was kind of hard to read this article, it was a little weird for me, i didn't understand everything but i think i got the  main idea but its hard to tell. Service learning is a great experience and that people should put more effort into it. it defiantly helps everyone because not only are the students learning and also helping the teachers. when i do my service learning, i kind of want it to last longer because it is so great to see the children so eager to learn and do more games with me, and when it is time for them to leave, they want to stay longer. this really shows that service learning is a great experience and it is a great thing to do. 

Talking Point # 4

Unlearning the Myths that Bind Us by Linda Christensen

This article talks about the importance of questioning the cartoons, movies, books,that we have watched and read while we were young. It also put us in categories like sexist, racist, and stereotypes and violence. Everyone has watched a Disney movie or seen cartoons on tv and read books on these three subjects.  They were always all over the place, there is no way someone wasnt able to watch or read these things. 

"Many student don't want to believe that they have been manipulated by children's media or advertising. no one wants to admit that they've been "handled" by media. They assure me that they make their own choices and the media has no power over them-as they sit with Fubu, Nike, Timberlands or whatever latest fashion rage might be."

This shows that the media does influence people even if they really don't think that it as. You see new clothes on television and magazines and people automatically feel like they need those products. Girls see other girls on television wearing certain things and they go out and buy those things because they are the latest fashion and will be more womanly then other girls that don't have these products. It goes the same with boys, they buy things so that they can stand out and feel more powerful. the media does have a lot of power over us and many people do not realize this.

"Look, Ursula the sea witch is ugly and smart. hey shes kind of dark looking. the young, pretty ones only want to hook their man; the old, pretty ones are mean because they are losing their looks. Kenneth noticed that people of color and poor people are either absent or servants to the rich, white, pretty people." 

I never really noticed this before but a lot of cartoons do have the white people being the rich and successful people and the colored are usually the ugly poor ones. i was thinking about Cinderella, she is a white girl who lives in a house of ugly white people. She goes to the ball and meets a handsome white prince. there was no part in that story where there was a colored person that was all dressed up and looking beautiful. A lot of stories are like this. Sleeping Beauty, again you have a white girl and a white man being all rich and beautiful and you have a darker person being the wicked ugly witch that causes the beautiful white girl to fall asleep forever. Its never the other way around. the only story that i can think of is Pocahontas, you have a beautiful Indian girl falling in love with a rich white man. Its a step up from the other stories, at least you have a colored person being a beautiful. But the only thing is that she has to marry a white man. Also, in the Lion King, you have the dark lion being the bad guy and the light lions being the good guys. There is also a lot of violence in the movie that shouldn't be in there. Cartoons are very different once you look closely at them. 

"for some the lesson doesn't end in the the classroom. many who watched cartoons before we start our study say they can no longer enjoy them. now instead of seeing a bunch of ducks in clothes, they see the racism, sexism and violence that swim under the surface of the stories."

I have noticed the same thing as i looked back at the cartoons and stories. every cartoon that i watched when i was a child were very sexiest and racist and most of them they were violent. Even Tom and Jerry is very violent. blowing and shooting each other. I first thought that it was just funny but  really it isn't any more. violence shouldn't be part of a young child's life and sexism shouldn't be either.These stereotypes are put into people of different classes, races, and sex which may not be accepted by the outside world but also as a self-realization and acceptance. you have to look close to see these things, and if you don't see them then you aren't looking close enough.

I liked this article because it really opened my eyes on these cartoons. i never really noticed these things before but now that i really look at them i notice everything. The media has been influencing people for the longest time and it even starts when they are young. children are told that you need to have money, and you need to be white and beautiful to be successful. But everyone needs to realized that you don't need any of that to be successful and happy. you should be yourself and not have the media influence them. 

Talking Points # 3

Gayness, Multicultural Education, and Community

Dennis Carlson

I believe that Carlson is trying to get people to see everyone as normal, and that there are no abnormal. He also says something about how teachers should take the responsibility to teach the children to use the words "lesbian","gay","homosexual" and any other words that people are afraid to use in today's society. These words should be used in every days life because there shouldn't be anything to be ashamed about. People today think that you should not use these words because they may offend people, but really, it is okay to use these words if you use them in the proper terms. 

1) “Willard Waller, in his 1932 classic The Sociology of Teaching, argued that homosexuals should not be allowed to teach for several reasons.”

I found this quote to be interesting because it shocked me that Carlson would bring the 1930's arguments into this article. Today's methods and beliefs are very different then what they were before. I was looking at Pat's blog and he said something about how this quote weakens her statement. I agree with that because by bringing in an argument that doesn't need to be brought in. She didn't need to bring this argument in because its not up to date with today's beliefs, I feel like if she found a newer argument then her piece would be a lot stronger.

2)"gay people have for the most part been made absent, invisible, and silent within this community and at the same time represented as the deviant and pathological 'other'."

I have never realized that gays were silent and absent in today's society. But when I looked around i started to noticed that they really are. I feel the reason why they may be so silent is because they are afraid that today's society wont accept them the way that they are because they aren't normal. But what is a normal person? How can you tell a normal person from a abnormal person? This is what I would like to learn. People should accept everyone for who they are and not judge them of their race, religion or beliefs. Everyone is different so there really cant be a normal person.

3)“Three techniques of normalization and (hence) marginalization have been of primary importance in this regard: (1) the erasure of gayness in the curriculum. (2) the “closeting” and “witch hunting” of gay teachers, and (3) verbal and physical intimidation of gay teachers and students.”

When I was in high school there were a group of girls that always hung out together, and no one ever thought it was a very big deal. Everyone just thought they were really close friends but then one day someone started to a rumor calling them lesbians. I thought that no way where they lesbians but it really turned out that they really where. It surprised me because I had no clue. It shows that you can be different and have no one even know. When I ever thought of a gay or lesbian I had this image in my head and no one ever fit that image. It comes to show that when you don't know someone you should judge them because you really never know who they really are. There was also a case when my athletic director was a lesbian. No one ever knew until one day she told someone that her wife was coming this school event. Everyone started to get all weird about it and didn't want her working as the athletic director anymore, even though she was the best one we ever had, she support everyone and always gave us what we needed. But because she was a lesbian, things changed. People judge everyone when they found out the truth about someone and i feel like that is completely wrong. Everyone needs to be treated the same way and not by their ways of life. 

I liked this article because it tells everyone that it is okay to be "gay" or whatever and you shouldn't be ashamed of who you are. Everyone is different in this world and no one should be afraid to be themselves and be afraid of being judged. This article was easy to read and easy to fallow. I liked how it talked about gender and sexuality. Those are key parts in life and when you aren't able to talk about these things then you aren't ready for today society. Everyone should read this article because it really gets right to the point and has good things to say. 

think piece 2

Teaching Multilingual Children by Collier

This articles was interesting to read because i like how bilingual children re being able to speak their language in class. Its a very good idea to have time to let the children speak their language during the day and not getting in trouble if they accidental speak their language not during the scheduled time. Being bilingual is a talent because it makes you more diverse which is a good thing. i feel like being patient with the students is a good thing because if they are older its harder to learn a language. if i try to learn Spanish now, most likely i wouldn't be able to do it. The bilingual children need to get more time in the class room, and they need more time to get things explained to them. It takes time, they need to learn the codes of power because that's the only way to get through this world at this time. The codes of power do control a lot in this world and Delpit would say something about that. To fully fulfill your potentials, the codes of power will get you there and without them you wont. I liked the article, because i believe it is very important to allow the children to speak their own language. 

McIntosh/Muwakkil

In McIntosh article she talks about different privileges people have. How white men have more privileges then anyone else and white women have more privileges then black men and women. She talks about how white people don't have to fear as many things as people of different ethnic groups do. Some people are born with the different privileges just because of their skin color. Women have many inequalities then men, but also she said something about how as a white women she has more advantages then people of different ethnicity. In her blog there was one part that stood out to me and it was "I can be sure that if I ask to talk to "the person in charge" I will be facing a person of my race."(McIntosh pg 3) I find this statement to be very true, because white men seem to always be in charge. Whenever you go some place and you do ask to speak to the manger, 95% it will be a white male or white female. White people seem to have more privileges then other ethnic groups because of their skin color. You can have two males, one white and one Asian, they are both highly skilled but when it comes down to picking the better person, most of the time the white male gets it. Skin color or gender should not decide what privileges someone should get, everyone should have the same privileges then everyone else, no matter if their white, black, Asian, Hawaiian, Mexican, male or women. Everyone is equal so that means everyone should get all the same privileges! 

Muwakkil article was talking about how whites believe that African Americans have just as many job opportunities as everyone else. Whites feel racism has gone down a lot and that African Americans are being treated with more respect. I feel like yeah racism has gone down a lot but it is still out there. Where ever you go you will find a group of people that are racist and you know it wrong but you don't do anything to stop it. African American people still don't get the respect they deserve and it is harder for them to get a job. Like the example i used in the first blog, if there was a white male and a black male fighting for a job, they both have the same qualities but most likely the white male will get the job over the black male. One because racism is still out there and two, most likely the person that is picking the males is most likely going to be white. I believe that everyone is racist, whites, black, asians ect. Everyone has something to say about each other. I know that not everyone means to be racist but they are. Some are more then others but its still out there. Like all the jokes you hear, yeah they are suppose to be funny but have anyone stopped to listen to the jokes carefully and think, wow this joke is really offensive. most likely no. Whites have more privileges then blacks and thats why whites get more jobs. I think it is wrong and like I have said before, everyone is equal so everyone should get the same opportunities as everyone else!
